Police could smell cannabis in the car of a drug-driver when he was pulled over, a court heard.

Daniel Carey, 32, was  driving a Ford Fiesta on Salterbeck Road in Workington at 3pm on March 13.

Peter Kelly, prosecuting, told Workington Magistrates’ Court that police pulled Carey over to speak to him and could smell cannabis in the car.

A drugs wipe was positive for cannabis and police found some of the drug on the front passenger seat of the car.

A blood test showed Carey had 3.8mcg of Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol per litre of blood. The legal limit is 2mcg .

Mr Kelly said Carey was a man of good character and had been fully co-operative with police.

Carey, who was unrepresented, said he had already pulled over in a layby and police had pulled up behind him.

He said he works at United Utilities and uses a vehicle to get to work.

Carey, of Inglewood Close, High Harrington, pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle with a proportion of a controlled drug above the specified limit and possessing a controlled drug of Class B – Cannabis.

The defendant was banned from driving for 12 months. He was fined £369 and must pay £85 costs and a £37 victim surcharge.

An order was made for forfeiture and destruction of the drugs.
