Carlisle man accused of attacking partner

MAGISTRATES have sent the case of a Carlisle man accused of assaulting his partner to the city’s crown court – at his request.

Darren Oliver, 51, told magistrates that he would deny the allegation he faces, assaulting the woman and causing her actual bodily harm. Prosecutors say that this happened on July 29 and involved the defendant using a bottle.

From the dock of the court, Oliver said that he wished to elect to have his case sent to Carlisle Crown Court for a trial.

After hearing submissions from prosecutor George Shelley and defence lawyer John Smith, magistrates remanded Oliver in custody.

The defendant, of Morton Rigg, Morton, will appear before the city’s crown court on September 2, when he is likely to be asked to formally enter his plea. A trial date is then likely to be set.
