Carlisle City enjoyed a memorable return to the FA Cup after a 42-year absence.

Jim Nichols' side beat West Auckland Town 2-1 away from home in the extra preliminary round.

Captain Josh Simpson grabbed the winner with a 53rd-minute free-kick to clinch a home tie against Goole in the preliminary round.

City had to come from behind in the north east after conceding an early James Ellis goal.

But Sam Atkinson headed Nichols' side level midway through the first half before Simpson - nephew of Carlisle United manager Paul - sent them through.

The win also secured £1,125 in prize money for the Gillford Park club. Northern Counties East League Premier Division Goole beat Consett 4-1 to book their trip to the Three Rivers Health and Safety Consultancy Stadium later this month.

Penrith, meanwhile, failed to set up a Cumbrian derby with Workington Reds.

Darren Edmondson's Bonny Blues are out of the cup after a 2-0 home defeat to West Allotment Celtic.

Penrith get £375 from the FA's prize money fund after falling at the first hurdle at the Leo Group Stadium.

Workington will now go to West Allotment in the preliminary round.
