WITH the school holidays in full swing, the RSPB have launched a free ‘Wild Challenge’ scheme for children across Cumbria.

The activities include pond dipping, making a bird bath and going on a ‘bug safari’.

Children can achieve bronze, silver and gold awards by completing the RSPB’s Wild Challenges and help give nature a home along the way, whilst having fun outdoors.

Rosalind Allen who is the RSPB education and families development officer, said: "Summer is the perfect time of year for families to have fun getting to know the nature on their Cumbrian doorsteps.

"Gardens, window-boxes, parks, and even washing-up bowl ponds, are teeming with wildlife- so it’s time to start exploring."

The move comes with many families concerned with the cost of living and the school holidays have presented a new challenge to struggling parents across the region.

The RSPB hope the scheme will allow families to spend time with each other without adding to financial burdens.

"The FREE RSPB Wild Challenges are really flexible," Rosalind Allen said, "and you can do many of the low or no cost activities in your local area or your garden, so no need to cover the cost of travel."

The ‘Wild Challenge’ runs throughout August and into the autumn.
