An ex Army captain recently attempted the world record swim from Cumbria to the Isle of Man, and it all started with a simple question from his son.

Adam Driver, from Fleetwood, attempted the 32 mile long swim last weekend from Cumbria to Ramsey, in the Isle of Man. However, the recent bad weather made conditions unsafe.

The whole notion started during lockdown when the pools were shut and Adam and his son were taking trips to the beach for a swim. Adams parents live in the Isle of Man and his son spotted the island across the water, and simply asked his dad, 'do you think you would be able to swim there?'

The world record has been previously attempted by a relay team in the Isle of Man who were unsuccesful in their pursuit.

Adam spoke about his preparations for the big swim, saying:

"Training was going well, there were no issues and I had been training for a couple of years. This included training twice a day in the sea, pool and land."

"I also have a good team from Fleetwood who are ex sea fariers and we had a good boat."

Adam has been raising money for numerous mental health charities as part of his preparation, and has currently raised over £6,000.

During the big swim, the weather became extremely unsafe for those involved to continue, Adam explained:

"It was really just poor weather, I had done over 12km at this point and the weather picked up. The boat, kayakers and myself were not safe. The boat could not see me at some point and the kayakers were either getting too close or they were losing sight of me if they tried to keep their distance. It had to be pulled."

Adam went onto to say how he felt after this:

"I was devestated and gutted to be honest."

However, this push back has not dampened Adam's spirits as he is already planning next years attempt so he can break the record once and for all, and continue raising money for important charities. Adam has teamed with up Andrew Powell from Healthy Heroes.

Adam explained how he is already preparing, by saying:

"We are in the planning stages for next year and are looking at what we can do differently as we have learnt more from our initial attempt but it is just weather dependant."

"However, I am very positive at the moment moving forward."
