A COMMUNITY rail officer has been left 'devastated' after the damage at Maryport railway station.

It is believed that the incident occurred between Wednesday and Friday morning, July 19-22, though the rail officer was unable to be more specific on details of times.

"Three of the Roman history boards on the platform were damaged with graffiti, the perpetrator has kindly left us their name, this being BAZERK#", they said.

It follows a number of incidents of damage to stations in the area over the past few months with the station being targeted in Flimby and Workington in recent months.

It is not the first incident at anti-social behaviour at the West Cumbrian railway station with Maryport being targeted by youths in March of this year.

Officers attended Maryport railway station following a report of young people on the railway tracks and climbing on buildings on March 3.

Warren Birch, community rail partnership officer said: “Following on from the damage to the planters at the start of the year, it’s so disappointing to hear of another incident at the railway station, this time to the Roman history boards.

"A great deal of time and effort has been spent on the railway station, it’s such a shame that people would feel the need to continually damage one of the key gateways into the town.”
