A FIRE chief has warned people to 'keep our countryside safe' this summer after crews from Keswick were called to an incident in the Lake District at the weekend.

At 8.22am on Sunday, July 24, crews from Keswick Fire Station were called to reports of a fire in the open.

Upon arrival, crews identified the fire was caused by a campfire that was still burning and deep seated into the ground.

Manager for prevention at Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service Craig Drinkland has asked people to 'please help' emergency services keep the countryside safe throughout the summer.

Mr Drinkald said:“Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service urge the public to not light campfires or disposable BBQs in rural areas as the ground is still very dry following the warm weather we have been experiencing.

“Every year, wildfires destroy thousands of acres of countryside and wildlife habitats.

"Some fires are started deliberately, but most are due to carelessness. Please, help us keep our countryside safe this summer.

“If you do see a fire in the open, please report it immediately to the emergency services by calling 999 – don’t assume someone else already has.”
