A MOTORCYLIST and pillion passenger were seriously injured as the result of a motorist’s careless driving on a major road near Thirlmere.

At Carlisle’ Rickergate court, Jill Miller, 60, pleaded guilty driving her Vauxhall Corsa without due care and attention on the A591 at the Wythburn Junction on March 23, causing a serious accident.

Court records spell out the charge in detail.

The offence was described as follows: “That on March 25, [the defendant] drove her car without due care and attention on the A591 in that she pulled across and oncoming lane into the path of a motorcyclist carrying a pillion passenger and collided with it.

“This caused parts of the motorcycle to fly up into the air and both motorcycle and passenger went off the road and into a wall.

“The rider of the motorcycle lost consciousness. Both the rider and the pillion passenger on the motorcycle received very serious injuries and were flown to hospital where they stayed for three weeks.”

After hearing the details, magistrates imposed a fine of £450 on the defendant, whose address was given as Abbey Far View, Cudworth, Barnsley.

They also imposed nine points on her licence and ruled that she must pay costs of £110 and a £45 victim surcharge. The court record does not specify what injuries were sustained by the two people on the motorbike.
