Pupils, staff and governors from a school are celebrating after being rated ‘Good’ in its recent Ofsted report.

St John Henry Newman Catholic School in Carlisle was judged as a ‘good school’ following an inspection on May 24 and 25, 2022.

John McAuley, the headteacher, was thrilled at the outcome of the two-day inspection and said: “Receiving a ‘Good’ rating across all areas of the inspection is wonderful news.

“It is a tribute to the hard work, dedication and talents of all St John Henry Newman Catholic School’s staff, governors and pupils.

“The latest Ofsted report highlights much of the positive work going on in school and is an accurate reflection of the outcomes and experiences we expect for our pupils.

“It is pleasing that the inspection team recognised that leaders have created a well-designed and ambitious curriculum and share an ambitious vision for our school, working together to make sure that all pupils and students benefit from a range of opportunities to learn how to become articulate and responsible citizens.

“I am delighted that the inspection team found that our pupils are proud of their school and enjoy coming here to learn.

“Pupils said that they feel safe in school and know that there is always someone that they can talk to if they have any worries or concerns.

“The report noted that the school has a strong community feel, where staff and students work well together.

“Personal development, behaviour and welfare are noted as good.

“We are proud that our pupils benefit from our effective safeguarding and the report highlights the school’s emphasis on the well-being and safety of all pupils and students.

“The report also acknowledges a well-planned programme of independent careers education, advice and guidance for all our pupils.

“This includes a wide range of work experience and the opportunity to learn about apprenticeships and career paths linked to pupils’ courses.

“This is helping to raise our pupils’ aspirations and to prepare them to move to further and higher education, training or employment.”

Amanda Yellowley, chair of governors, said: “St John Henry Newman Catholic School has come through many challenges over recent years, most significantly the devastating flooding of our previous city-centre site, which makes this success of this inspection particularly poignant.”
