Ben Stokes' England completed a record run-chase this morning to beat India.

Brilliant centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root saw England make short work of their target at Edgbaston.

They took England to 378 for 3 as they made history with their seven-wicket win.

It was England's biggest run-chase in Tests and also the biggest at Edgbaston.

And it continued a fairytale start to the Test captaincy by Cumbrian Stokes.

He has won all four Tests since taking charge, under new coach Brendan McCullum, having already whitewashed New Zealand 3-0 ahead of this India game.

Former England skipper Mike Atherton said the sense of positivity under Cockermouth star Stokes is undeniable.

"What a start to that man's captaincy career," said Sky Sports commentator Atherton of Stokes.

"They are an incredibly confident side right now."

Resuming on 259 for 3, 119 runs short of a remarkable win, Root and Bairstow batted superbly to steer Stokes' side home.

Root reached his 28th Test hundred and was 142 not out by the end, while Bairstow continued his incredible recent form with 114 not out.

It vindicates the positive brand of cricket England have attempted during Stokes' fledgling captaincy.

Root also paid tribute to Stokes for his "aggressive" tactical approach.

The victory in the rescheduled test levelled the delayed series at 2-2.
