A much-loved town carnival will not go ahead this year but plans are already underway for an even bigger event next year.

Cockermouth Carnival was first held more than 120 years ago. Town councillors Julie Laidlow and Isabel Burns, who have been on the committee for more than 30 years, resurrected the carnival in 2016 after a five-year break.

The last one was held in 2019. It was decided earlier this year that with so much uncertainty regarding the pandemic it would be better to focus on running the event next year.

Cllrs Burns and Laidlow were delighted when, on the back of the successful Jubilee town celebrations in Memorial Gardens, fellow councillors recently decided to make the fun day an annual event.

"It will be held on the same day as carnival day, meaning there will be lots going on in the town," said Cllr Burns.

The colourful, musical procession - lead by Cockermouth Mechanics Band - always winds its way through town, along Main Street and on to Memorial Gardens.

Many people line the street to watch the Queens, schools and entertainment.

"It's always a great day so we're looking forward to next year," said Cllr Burns.
