BARRISTERS in criminal cases have gone on strike across Cumbria in protest to the government’s proposals on legal aid.

The nationwide industrial action came after 80 per cent of those polled by the Criminal Bar Association voted in favour of drastic steps — including non-attendance at court and refusing to accept new instructions.

The walkouts come after concerns the government will not improve a proposed increase in the criminal legal aid system which ensures that all defendants get proper and fair representation.

The government review set up called for an immediate rise as an emergency measure of 15 per cent last year was put forward last year.

However, members of the Criminal Bar Association (CBA) have said this is too low and called for a minimum 25 per cent wage increase.

Subsequently, barristers have rejected a proposed 15 per cent rise in their fees for undertaking legal aid work, enforcing the action to be taken over the next four weeks.

LT Law Carlisle, a solicitor firm specialising in criminal defence, motoring and regulatory law, have said they are in support of the Criminal Bar Association actions.
