FIGURES spotted scaling the towering Dixon's Chimney in Carlisle are undertaking routine inspection work on the 88 metre structure.

Workers in high-vis jackets are carrying out 'routine inspection and maintenance works' according to a city council spokesperson.

They began today and works are expected to last around two weeks.

The chimney and associated mill - originally a cotton mill - were constructed in 1836 by Peter Dixon.

The chimney became a Grade-II listed structure in 1972.
