GARY Boswell (The Cumberland News, April 29) harks back wistfully to the advantages of ‘being in the euro’ – when the UK was never in the euro.

Crafty Remainer commentators do their best to implicate Brexit in the current cost of living crisis – when an ONS inflation report of March 23 revealed that UK inflation is ‘broadly in line with the EU average’.

And Forward in Europe’s survey (The Cumberland News, May 13) – regarding the lack of Brexit benefits – conveniently overlooks the fact that [according to Lord Ashcroft Polls] the main driver of the Leave vote was a desire for the UK to be an independent country rather than a European region and that only 6 per cent of Leave voters expected any economic improvement from the process.

There’s no doubt that Brexit has caused many difficulties and it might well have contributed to the rise in inflation, but Covid and the war in Ukraine are the main culprits.

Quite understandably, the economy was the main reason why people voted Remain but (according to polls) 17 per cent cited a fear of isolation as their reason for doing so.

Now we see post-Brexit Britain at the heart of Europe where it really matters – helping to defend Europe against Russian aggression – and coming a popular second in the Eurovision song contest.
