GREASE really was the word in town at the weekend as a theatre group took to the stage to perform the hit musical for audiences in Workington.

The Workington and District Amateur Musical Society performed the show to four nights of sellout crowds in the town's Carnegie Theatre.

The musical was based on the story of a whirlwind summer romance, after which leather-clad greaser Danny and girl-next-door Sandy are unexpectedly reunited when she transfers to Rydell High for senior year.

The musical then explores whether they can survive the trials and tribulations of teenage life and find true love once more.

It's hard to believe that a sleepy little town like Workington could properly convey life in a teenage summer fantasy, but boy did they prove us wrong.

Musical Theatre graduate Evie Askew wowed as Sandy Dumbrowski filling the theatre with her magical nvoice as she performed classics from the show such as Hopelessly Devoted to you, Sandra Dee and Summer Nights alongside her suave Danny Zuko played by Andrew McMinn.

The pair perfectly depicted the in-love couple who generations of fans have spent so many years growing to adore.

All the classics were performed by an extremely talented cast with many singing along to anthems such as Greased Lightening and You're the One That I Want.

Special commendation must go out to Rizzo played by Sarah Deans and Amber Redhead as Patty Simcox who lived and breathed their roles.

The personal favourite performance of mine throughout the night was outstanding rendention of Beauty School Drop Out from Teen Angel played by Donna Bradley acccompanied by the full company - as well as the fantastic vocals the costumes complete with tin-foil aprons and high wigs with rollers almost surpassed the version that became so well-loved in the movie version.

There is one thing for sure Grease is most definately still the word- from props to choreography the performance was seemless with many in the theatre rising to give a standing ovation to the cast as the curtains called.

The audience were visibly entertained with many commenting on the quality of the show as they left the theatre - it was a night full of laughter, enjoyment and thorough 5-star entertainment.
