NEWS and Star readers have shared their optimism after Jodie Whittaker’s replacement as the Doctor in the long-running BBC series Doctor Who was revealed last weekend.

The BBC announced on Sunday, May 8 that Ncuti Gatwa will take over as the new Time Lord.

Whittaker announced last July that she would be leaving the role, creating speculation as to who would replace her. She took over the role in 2017 as the first female Doctor.

The Scottish actor currently stars as Eric Effiong in Netflix’s hugely popular Sex Education about socially awkward high school student Otis (Asa Butterfield) and his sex therapist mother Jean (Gillian Anderson).

He said: “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.

“I will endeavour my upmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger.

“As much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”

On the News and Star’s Facebook page, readers have shared their thoughts on the announcement.

Sarah Pollock wrote: “He’s a great actor, should be good.”

Mary Treme commented: “I think it is absolutely fantastic.”

Lindsay King shared: “Love it. I lost interest after David Tennant. I'm sure he will bring me back.”

Even those who may not know about Gatwa seem to think he will do a fine job.

Pauline McHardy said: “I’ve never seen him acting. Why not? He will make the character his own. We are a nation of complainers and don't like change. We will still watch it. Good luck to him.”

Anthony Nicholson continued: “Not sure who he is, will see how he gets on before judging.”
