SUPERMARKETS across the country are beginning to limit customers on how much cooking oil can be bought as exports are disrupted by war in Ukraine.

The news comes as Waitrose and Morrisons have limited shoppers to two bottles each, whilst Tesco are allowing three bottles per customer.

The majority of the UK's sunflower oil comes from Ukraine and as a result of disruption to their export industry it has led to shortages and created a push for alternatives.

For Cumbria’s only home-grown cooking oil, it's a reminder that you can't guarantee food security and being environmentally-friendly without starting from home.

Eden Yard is the new extra virgin rapeseed oil company launched by Ben and Jannike Taylor back in December, grown from their three-generations family farm, near Penrith.

"As a country, we don't grow as much oil seed rape as we did years ago, mainly because there's a lot of restrictions these days such as certain insecticides that can't be used here anymore as it can wipe out full fields of crops," Jannike said.

"But of course we can import it, even if the same insecticides been used abroad - if you can buy anything that supports British produce and agriculture then why would you not, you can't get much more environmentally-friendly than buying from local producers.

"If everyone's a bit more aware about the availability of buying locally, it's a step in the right direction," she said.

Not only did Jannike point out the benefits of home-growing oil to the UK's shortage supply problem but, also the health benefits the oil possesses such as being naturally high in Vitamin E, filled with the good Omega acids, and is naturally low in saturated fat.

"You think about where your meat is sourced and things like that, not so much with oil however, but it's a brilliant oil, much healthier than olive oil and more sustainably sourced, so I don't know what's not to love.

"We've got lots that will be coming in the next harvest in August, I don't envisage us having a problem with supply, it's important people realise you can get cooking oil within this country," she said.

The 'wholesome nutty tasting oil' has shone in its success and growth since the product was launched earlier this year, having already been shortlisted for Cumbria Food Awards, for Innovation of the Year Award as well as being housed in multiple Michelin Star restaurants throughout the county.

The family-run business look to add to their range in the future.
