The latest three groups to be awarded grants from a community fund has been announced.

The Metalcraft Cockermouth Community Fund was set up by Meetalcraft, manufacturers of specialist intermediate level waste containers for Sellafield’s decommissioning process, to support not-for-profit organisations and financially contribute to worthwhile organisations within the town.

This week they presented a cheque for £250 to Cockermouth Mechanics Band. The money will go towards a new soprano cornet. They also announced the latest recipients of funds from the scheme.

Cockermouth Linking Lives, a befriending project, secured £250 towards a games and social events for the local community; Cockermouth Wasps received £350 match funding towards the cost of flood lights at their Grasmoor Sports Complex ground; while the local RSPB received £153.50 to install nesting boxes along a popular route into town.

Stephen Buttriss, sales manager at Metalcraft, said: “We’re delighted to announce three further recipients of funds from The Metalcraft Cockermouth Community Fund and to be able to support three such different but equally valuable projects that are making a tangible difference to the local community.

“With a number of projects supported by our apprentices due to get underway too, there is a real sense that the fund is beginning to build positive momentum and I’d urge anyone considering applying for the next quarter to get their applications in as soon as possible.”

John Wilson, secretary of The Cockermouth Mechanics Band, said: “Our members are delighted to have been chosen for this funding.

"Currently, our soprano player is playing on a trumpet which is creating a mismatch with the other instruments in the band, and we really need a cornet to achieve the authentic brass band sound.

"This contribution will go towards a new cornet that will help us to continue our high standard of music.”

The Metalcraft Cockermouth Community Fund offers up to £2,000 per year of support for organisations based in Cockermouth. £500 per quarter is available to community groups and not-for-profit organisations based in Cockermouth to support specific projects, as opposed to day-to-day running costs.

Organisations are also able to apply for practical support from Metalcraft, which is delivered by apprentices on its award-winning scheme.

Anyone interested in applying for the next round of funding can fill in an application form at the company’s website (www.metalcraft.co.uk/communityfund).

The deadline for the second round of applications is June 30.
