Brave Danny Hodgson says he is making "rapid" progress as he learns to walk again during his recovery from an attack.

The Cumbrian footballer has also spoken of his determination to continue getting better.

Danny is recovering from the unprovoked attack in Perth, Western Australia, last year which left him critically injured.

He is now out of hospital to continue his courageous progress.

The 26-year-old has spoken in an interview with Australian station Channel 9.

The former Carlisle United youth player said: "Every day is a challenge.

"The main thing now is to learn how to walk again, which I'm improving rapidly."

"There's always light at the end of the tunnel," he added.

"You've just got to brace yourself and set a mindset that you're going to get through it and happier days will come."

Danny and his family have also called on the authorities to do more to deter similar attacks.

They have called for an increase in the mandatory sentence term.

"If they want to stop this happening, they've got to act now," Danny said.

"The quicker they act, the quicker it stops."

Danny's mum Nicola also told the TV station of the way the attack on Danny had hit the family hard.

She said it "broke our family, literally broke it to pieces...we're literally putting those pieces back together every day and it's never going to be normal."

She also spoke of Danny's remarkable recovery including his progress as he learns to walk again.

"It's something we didn't think we were going to see," she said.

"We were told he wouldn't do it and here he is just knocking down barriers and making me proud every day."

The teenager who admitted attacking Danny at a train station last September was recently sentenced to three years and eight months in a juvenile detention centre.
