Carlisle United’s spending on agents increased by more than £20,000 in the last year, new figures reveal.

Statistics published by the Football Association show the Blues paid players’ representatives a total of £60,001 from February, 2 2021 to January 31, 2022.

That was up from £39,360 in the previous 12-month period.

United’s outlay on intermediaries was the eighth highest in League Two - and the Blues said they are assessing their levels of spending with the future in mind.

A spokesman said: "The period covered was busy with a large number of deals conducted.

"The spend has gone up considerably and is something we are looking at closely going forward."

The figures covered deals done in last summer’s transfer window and during this January.

Some 17 deals done by the Cumbrians were included in the FA data.

United’s agent outlay had been the 14th highest in League Two for the 2020-21 period.

The increase this time follows comments made by chief executive Nigel Clibbens last year when he said Carlisle had increased their budget by 20 per cent this season.

The 2020-21 period, though, covered 13 deals compared with this year’s 17.

The figures also cover the final period over dealmaking overseen by former director of football David Holdsworth, and apply to transfer business by ex-manages Chris Beech and Keith Millen.

The highest spenders in United’s division were Bristol Rovers, with £119,817, with Hartlepool United the lowest with £10,174.

United’s fellow Cumbrians Barrow had the 13th highest outlay in League Two, with £53,062.

A total of £1,285,606 went to agents from League Two’s 24 clubs during the year.

United’s dealings in the 12-month period are also listed by the Football Association.

They include ten new signings – those of Tristan Abrahams, Zach Clough, Manasse Mampala, Jordan Gibson, Kelvin Mellor, Joel Senior, Omari Patrick, Mark Howard, Tobi Sho-Silva and Kristian Dennis.

New deals for Morgan Feeney, Jack Armer, Jon Mellish, Lewis Alessandra and Callum Guy also featured, along with keeper Scott Simons’ first professional deal.

Brad Young’s loan move was included too.

Premier League clubs shelled out £272.6m on agents in the same period, with Manchester City the country’s highest spenders with £35m.

League One club Crewe Alexandra were the lowest spenders on agents in the Football League with £3,750.

National League leaders Stockport County, meanwhile, spent £131,692 on agents – a figure higher than every club in League Two and 13 League One.

The FA add: "The listed transactions involving each registered Intermediary between 02 February 2021 and 31 January 2022 do not necessarily relate directly to the total payment figure per club, as these payments may have been in relation to transactions that started before 02 February 2021."
