The News & Star readers have reacted to plans for an expansion of Carlisle Railway Station which will see the demolotion of two popular shops.
Carlisle’s railway station is set to undergo a major redevelopment thanks to £20 million from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.
And new details about the major Carlisle Station Gateway project have been released this week.
As planning authority, Carlisle City Council has been asked for planning permission to demolish the former Staples store on Station Business Park.

Stacey Clark said: "I think the money could be made better use of Jigsaw, Hospice at Home and lots of other charities are struggling."
Sandy Barnes said: "Bulloughs building standing empty yet it could be made in to a number of smaller shops for local people to rent out. The town is just so sad and bare now and I couldn’t afford to rent a shop in the town centre for my business."
Dan Mason said: "100% behind this, clear the front of the station of endless cars and traffic. Then use the back end of the site to its greater advantage."
Caroline Mullholland said: "What a waste of money and resources. The city is on its knees and having a new station front isn’t going to get more business here."
Louise Wright said: "This is an Historic city with many historic buildings. I understand the need to adapt and change, but why at the cost of the area around the citadel for students and more pedestrianisation? We have sadly lost a beautiful building on the viaduct that could have been converted for student accommodation. Please, just stop."
The demolition of the Staples store will facilitate the creation of a new car park for the station, paving the way for its expansion.
Cumbria County Council has requested permission for the works which will involve access to the other existing stores on James Street.
A report prepared for a meeting of the Borderland Growth Partnership this week reveals that the Matalan store will also be demolished to facilitate the expansion.
