Hundreds of people took part in a silent prayer last night (Sunday, February 27).
The brief gathering, which reportedly saw more than 200 people, took place in Carlisle city centre at the Market Cross, to pray for those experiencing peril in Ukraine.
Ukrainian flags were put up on the cross, and people attending rapped themselves in the flag, and painted their faces with he flag's colours - blue and yellow.
Brian Wernham, a campaigner and political candidate for the new unitary authority from Carlisle Lib Dems, said: "This is the darkest day for our continent since 1945.
"The blood of every innocent Ukrainian who perishes in this illegal invasion is on Putin’s hands."
