CARLISLE City Council have put a scheme in place to promote a healthy lifestyle, with a social aspect for anyone who feels they need companionship.

This rambling scheme is an introduction to a more active life, with walks taking place every fortnight, with the next one happening on February 16, with walkers meeting at the footbridge at Denton Street, Denton Holme.

Carlisle City Council said: "Carlisle City Council is proud to be part of the national Ramblers Walking for Health scheme and we have successfully delivered a programme of health walks within the City and district for several years.

"Walking for Health walks are friendly and accessible group walks held within our local area.

"Each walk is led by a trained walk leader and is supported by volunteer back and mid markers who have also attended the Ramblers walk leader training.

"Walks are held fortnightly on Wednesday’s with walks departing at 10.30am and 1pm (from the same starting point). The walks provide a gentle introduction to walking and provide a great opportunity to develop your fitness and increase your physical activity.

"The walks are also a very social activity with lots of opportunities to chat with other walkers and meet new people.

"We have a varied programme of walks in which we visit some of the beautiful parks and nature reserves in our area as well as walks within our City Centre.

"All walks are on good paths however we do advise walkers to wear suitable footwear and clothing for the conditions. On all walks the walk leader shares information with walkers on the history or points of interest about the area we are walking in.

"Walks vary in length but are usually 45 minutes to a maximum of 1 ½ hours in length.

"Opportunities to train to become a Walking for Health walk leader are available and training is delivered in partnership with Active Cumbria. If you are interested in this volunteering opportunity please contact 07935 001511 or email walkingforhealth@carlisle.gov.uk."

For more experienced walkers, there’s a more challenging walk route that takes place on Tuesdays. ‘Tuesday Trundles’ offer a more challenging and longer walk over varying gradients and surfaces.
