HUNDREDS of customers were without electricity today due to a power cut.

A third party carrying out works in the City Centre of Carlisle struck an underground cable which caused the fault.

A spokesperson for Electricity North West said: “We received reports of a power cut this afternoon in Carlisle at 1.45pm affecting 336 properties after a third party carrying out works in the city damaged an underground electricity cable.

“Our teams responded immediately and using our automatic restoration systems were able to restore power to 322 properties by 3:08pm.

“Engineers remain on site assessing the damage and aim to restore power to those affected as quickly and as safely as possible.”

The cut has affected a number of city centre businesses.

There have been reports of it affecting The Lanes in Carlisle.

When approached, a spokesperson from The Lanes refused to comment.
