A CARLISLE school has been celebrating some special sporting achievements by its pupils.

Austin Friars have continued to keep their pupils busy throughout the Lent term, with sports teams doing the school proud and classes commemorating world events.

The school had ten pupils competing in the annual cross-country Catteral Shield event held at Giggleswick School. Conditions were challenging with a heavy muddy course to contend with, however all runners performed exceptionally well.

Continuing with sport, the school’s U12 Rugby team played Kirkham on Saturday and, in a game of 2 halves, ran out the winners - nine tries to seven.

The school also honoured Holocaust Memorial Day, where the whole of 4th and 5th form, as well as the 6th form historians were off timetable as they took part in special sessions arranged to coincide with a live webcast from the Holocaust Education Trust.

The webcast offered students the opportunity to hear a live testimony from Holocaust survivor, Eva Clarke. Eva spoke about how she had been born in Mauthausen concentration camp, Austria, in 1945. She and her mother were the only survivors of their family, 15 members of whom were killed in Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Spread over multiple locations in the school, the pupils worked through some preparation activities in small groups before listening to the testimony via webcast. They then followed and concluded the morning with some reflection activities on the particularly emotive subject.
