Newcastle United's highly-rated Carlisle-born midfielder Joe White has joined one of the Blues' rivals on loan.

The promising Premier League midfielder has signed for Hartlepool United until the end of the season.

It will give the 19-year-old his first taste of first-team football with the club sitting 16th in League Two.

White has been close to the Newcastle first-team this season and has been on the bench a number of times.

He now links up with Graeme Lee's Pools in a bid to add senior experience to his burgeoning career.

White is understood to have attracted interest from other clubs and Pools manager Lee said he was pleased to have signed the Cumbrian.

"We are delighted to secure Joe given the high-profile interest in him recently," Lee told the Monkey Hangers' website.

"He is a highly rated footballer, very creative and forward thinking. We want to say thank you to Newcastle for working with us on this and allowing Joe to join us until the end of the season.’’

White, who was on Carlisle's books before joining Newcastle in 2016, added: "I’m really keen to play first team football now and once I knew Hartlepool were interested I wanted to come.

"I know the manager wants to play good football and that was one of the key reasons why I wanted to join.

"I want to play as many games as possible between now and the end of the season, scoring and assisting goals and showing the fans what I’m capable of."

White, an England youth international, is the grandson of the late former Carlisle United coach and physio and Workington Reds manager Peter Hampton.

His first outing could come in the FA Cup against Crystal Palace next weekend.

it has not yet been confirmed whether White's home-city club had also been interested in a potential loan move for the teenager.

White won't get the chance to encounter the Blues this season, with Carlisle and Pools having already faced each other twice in the league and also in the Papa John's Trophy.
