A man researching the crew of a World War II squadron who lost their lives is requiring assistance with tracking down relatives of the Carlisle-based parents of one particular crew member.

Kevin King is the Chairman of The Friends of 75 (NZ) Squadron Association and is studying the crew of a Lancaster. The Squadron lost all members of the crew on March 14 1945.

The association have members across the globe whose relatives served on the Squadron. It is their intention to foster the spirit of the Squadron and honour the memory of those that served. The group state that we owe so much to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The navigator of the Avro Lancaster I was Flight Sergeant William Phinn, who was just 23-years-old. William was the son of Peter and Mary Ann Phinn who came from Denton Holme.

Flt Sgt Phinn was based at RAF Mepal near Ely Cambridgeshire. He and the rest of the crew were on their 30th and last operation. William is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany. His epitaph reads: "He lived for those he loved and those he loved remember. Rest in peace."

Mr King is now trying to find out further information regarding the crew trying and is looking to get in touch with any relatives of William to try and build a picture of his life.

If you know of anyone who could be related to William, you can contact Kevin at kevinfking@talktalk.net or by calling 07801 743211.
