ON BBC Radio Cumbria on January 7 I heard Cllr Stephen Higgs’s plans for the Queen’s Jubilee in June.
These include a beacon (bonfire or so) in Bitts Park near the Queen Victoria statue. What a daft place!
Beacons are meant to be visible from far and wide, up on the hills, not down on the level, hidden by trees and buildings.
Put it up at Stanwix, which is where the Roman Wall’s cavalry depot was, Petriana, at the top of Stanwix Bank/Rickerby Park).
Plenty more will see it there. Or have a Bitts bonfire – but don’t call it a beacon.
