REMARKABLY, we are nearly halfway through the first month of the year.

The more organised people amongst us may have already planned where to take their significant other for Valentine’s Day in February.

Celebrated each year on February 14, shops across the country clear out their festive stock for love heart-shaped cards, boxes of chocolates and an array of flowers for those who are on the lookout of picking a quick option for their loved one.

Contrary to popular belief, Allerdale offers those in love numerous opportunities to treat each other. We asked our readers on Facebook to name their favourite place to take a date around the city. The top 10 choices are:

1) The Garden – The bar and restaurant on Workington’s Steelman’s Walk has become a popular fixture since its opening last August.

2) Golden Lion – The Senhouse Street hotel sits overlooks Maryport harbour and has 16 rooms for couples who wish to have a relaxing night away.

3) Royal Yew – One couple basically organised their next date on our page! The team at the Workington pub is passionate about local food with menus that suit all tastes and budgets with a choice of traditional pub food, vegetarian or modern brasserie dishes.

4) Workington Reds – One reader finds that taking in a game with a pie at Borough Park is one way to woo your significant other. Who are we to question them? The team are currently on a four-game winning run so it will definitely be entertaining.

5) Zest – It was suggested that some should head along to Copeland to try this Whitehaven cafe. Located at the harbour, they offer an ultimate snacking menu in a casual setting.

6) Seth’s Bar – Situated in Cockermouth’s Market Place, the pub serves cocktails and has a wide range of gins, wines and homemade dishes.

7) Aspava - On Cockermouth’s Main Street, the company provide Turkish dishes freshly prepared to order from local produce and from imported Turkish ingredients.

8) The Mad Scientist – The trendy bar on Workington’s Jane Street offers cocktails, wines, spirits & coffee all in a cosy relaxed atmosphere.

9) Flavour – The cocktail bar on Workington’s Washington Street also offers fresh, locally sourced produce served Mediterranean tapas style to tantalise and delight your palate, in unique and eclectic surroundings.

10) Stay at home - A couple of readers said that preparing a meal in the comfort of their own home, especially with Covid still lingering, is the perfect way to spend time with their loved one. Nothing says romance more than a night of 'Netflix and chill'.
