A Carlisle woman has recently moved to a new family home in South Shields.

You may read that sentence wondering what all the commotion is about. However, 27-year-old Georgie Robinson managed to do so by spending £16 on raffle tickets for the property.

Adam Thwaites and his wife Liz chose to put their three-bedroom home into a raffle for £1 per ticket through website Raffall.

The couple wanted to raise money for Grace House to allow the organisation to buy a wheelchair-accessible swing, which cost £13,000.

Speaking last year, Adam said: "We always planned on selling our home this year. We want to move closer to family, work, and Emily’s nursery.

"Over the last couple of years though, we've been following other property competitions, and something about it made us fall in love with the idea.

"What’s more, there were loads of people who were using the opportunity to raise money for charities that meant something to them.

"Liz works at Grace House, a charity providing short breaks for disabled children and I was talking to the Registered Manager one day about their need for a wheelchair-accessible swing.

"We decided to go for it and try to raffle off our home, enabling us to move, letting someone win an amazing prize in time for Christmas and also raising funds for Grace House."

Thousands participated in the raffle and 86,108 tickets were issued as the competition ended.

Adam and Liz managed to raise enough to both give away their home while still raising the first £3,000 towards the sought-after swing for Grace House.

Georgie was overwhelmed with emotion after receiving an email to tell her she had won the competition.

She said: "It was a shock, you just don't imagine that you're going to win do you? Everyone hopes but you never think that it's going to happen.

"I bought 16 tickets - I put some on when the raffle first came out, then a month later I thought 'I'll just put on a few more.'

"When I found out I'd won, I was in that much shock - I was supposed to wrap presents after too!"
