A landscape charity in Cumbria is offering the public the chance to gen involved in an exciting project in Threlkeld near Keswick.

Friends of the Lake District member Mike Hambrey gifted the charity two hectares of land to form a new woodland that will soon be accessible to the public.

A new access path has been created to Dam Mire Wood and the charity is now looking for people who want to get involved to help enhance the land.

Land Manager Jan Darrall said: "We are really excited to be able to offer a new volunteer opportunity at what is now our most northerly property in Cumbria. Anyone is welcome to book up and join us on our first volunteering work party of the year where we will be doing some staking and weeding of newly planted trees.

"This is the first of many opportunities that people will have to enjoy this new public space. Working with West Cumbria Rivers Trust we are creating new woodland habitats and we are keen for people to get involved and give us ideas as to what other things they would like us to do with the land. We’ll shortly be providing details of a series of public engagement events early in 2022 so do check our website for updates."

News and Star:

The group started their landscape work back in 1943 in Whinlatter and since then have completed around 600 projects with grants across Cumbria totalling £1 million in investment.

Friends of the Lake District say that their aim is protect and enhance natural spaces across the county and they do this by taking action to protect and conserve these spaces.

They do this to benefit visitors and the community as well as helping out wildlife and their natural habitats. Their ongoing work has made big achievements like ensuring the creation of the Lake District National Park.

There are a number of opportunities to take part and volunteer but bookings must be made beforehand.

The workparty takes place on Monday 10th January 2022 and details of how to volunteer can be found at the following link: www.friendsofthelakedistrict.org.uk.
