Teenage Cumbrian Jarrad Branthwaite is now a Premier League goalscorer.

The former Carlisle United defender got the equaliser for Everton in their 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Thursday night.

Branthwaite was making his first top-flight appearance of the season for the Toffees.

And the 19-year-old from Wigton stunned the Stamford Bridge crowd when he pounced to score in the 74th minute.

It was the highly-rated Cumbrian's first goal for Everton - and a landmark moment in the centre-half's promising career.

He was on hand to turn in an Anthony Gordon free-kick at the far post before celebrating with his team-mates in front of the travelling Everton fans.

Branthwaite's goal wiped out Mason Mount's opener for Thomas Tuchel's home side and earned a much-needed point for Rafa Benitez's visitors.

And it capped a memorable six days for the former Nelson Thomlinson School boy after he signed a new three-and-a-half year contract at Everton on Saturday.

His goal was only the second of Branthwaite's professional career - his first coming in November 2019 when, aged 17 years and 138 days, he became Carlisle's youngest-ever scorer with a solo goal against Morecambe.

England Under-20 international Branthwaite was called into the Everton side for only his third Premier League start and his fifth top-flight appearance in total since his move from Carlisle in January 2020.

Speaking afterwards, the Cumbrian said of his goal: "I can't put it into words, really. I'm buzzing.

“We worked on it in training and I got a few chances round the back. I said to Anthony before the game, ‘Keep delivering those balls in’. When it came to me I was like, ‘Right I’d better score here’.

“When it went in I was over the moon.”

Branthwaite added of the game: "Playing for this club means the world, and for the fans who travelled on a Thursday night, and for us to put on a performance for them…I’m buzzing.

“It was my first Premier League start in a while, I just wanted to enjoy it. To get the result we did against a top team, I’m really happy for the fans.”

Branthwaite, in his post-match interview, was reminded of his previous senior goal for Carlisle.

He added: “When I signed my new contract the other day, I was speaking to my family and agent [the ex-United captain David Reeves] and they said, ‘Just remember how far you’ve come in two years – from playing in League Two for Carlisle, the club I’d been at since I was eight, and now the Premier League today…I’m buzzing.”
