RESTORATION works are planned for the enclosed garden at a children’s hospice.

Works are planned to improve and restore the garden area of Jigsaw Children’s Hospice in Carlisle.

A request for planning permission has been submitted to Carlisle City Council for the works which include creating sensory experiences, installing sculptures and covered areas.

Jigsaw provides day to day care and activities for children and young people who are living with a life limiting illness.

Their vision is: “To provide care and support to people affected by life limiting illness and those who require palliative care.”

The service is found at the same base as Eden Valley Hospice on Durdar Road.

In their planning statement, the charity revealed plans to create sensory experiences including a range of sounds, lovely scent, different textures to touch and walk on and vibrant colours.

Plans also include redesigning the entrance gates to meet the wall rather than the window and enhance the whole entrance courtyard with raised flower beds against the wall.

The Jigsaw logo will be included in a climbing/stepping stone sculpture and in other play art features.

A circular route through the garden will be installed with paved surfacing to accommodate tricycles, and other wheeled toys as well as a walkway to enjoy the whole garden. Landscaping will involve a wide range of plants and flowers with year-round colour and varied scents.

Seating, picnic tables will allow wheelchairs to be alongside the rest of the family with some under cover options and some in the sunshine.

A safe and interactive water feature will be installed in the garden for residents to enjoy. The experience in Jigsaw Children’s Hospice will incorporate music and sound with instruments and audio play.

Improvements will ensure all aspects of the garden are “safe and robust” to reduce the need for ongoing maintenance.

Materials will be supplied through sustainable sources.
