A critically-ill Cumbrian footballer has finally been moved out of intensive care after nearly two months.

Danny Hodgson's parents said their son is now in the Royal Perth Hospital Trauma Ward.

Danny, who was the victim of an alleged unprovoked attack, remains in a critical condition and continues to be closely monitored by neurosurgeons.

But the 26-year-old west Cumbrian's mum and dad, Nicola and Peter, said their son is aware of them by their bedside in Australia.

And they have paid tribute to the medics who have helped their son.

In an update issued this morning, Nicola and Peter said: “Yesterday, after 59 long days in ICU, our son Danny, moved into the Royal Perth Hospital Trauma Ward.

"Danny is still in a critical condition and under the care of a team of neurosurgeons who continue to monitor him 24/7.

"He has a tracheotomy which means he is unable to speak to us, but he is aware that we are with him.

"Even the smallest effort is a mammoth undertaking for Danny, and we are in awe of his courage and spirit.

"We would like to express our eternal gratitude to the army of ICU doctors and nurses who helped Danny fight on for the last 59 days.

"Your dedication to our son has been incredible."

Danny, who plays for Perth-based football team ECU Joondalup, was seriously injured in an alleged attack outside Perth train station in the early hours of September 5.

The former Carlisle United youth team player underwent emergency surgery and has since needed further procedures with his condition critical since he was injured.

When the news first emerged, Danny's parents launched a desperate plea for help with a flight to Australia amid the country's Covid restrictions so they could be with their son.

They received huge support both at home and Down Under and, after quarantining in a hotel for 14 days, have been able to be by Danny's side in hospital.

A major fundraising effort has raised a six-figure amount to help with Danny's recovery, while football stars including Cristiano Ronaldo and Danny's fellow west Cumbrian Dean Henderson have sent messages of support.

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with grievous bodily harm. Reports in Australia today said the accused attacker is in custody waiting to enter a plea.
