A SUSPENDED jail sentence has been imposed on a 29-year-old Carlisle man who has admitted a "drink-fuelled assault" on his former partner.

Dean Thomas Stewart pleaded guilty to the following offences: assaulting the woman who is a former partner; damaging the windscreen and exterior panels of her Honda Civic car; and possessing the class B drug amphetamine.

The defendant, of Allandale Road, Carlisle, committed all three offences on May 1 in Carlisle, the city's Rickergate court was told.

Magistrates imposed a 16-week jail term, but suspended the sentence for two years. The sentence incudes an order that Stewart must complete a Building Better Relationships course.

He must also participate in an 'accredited programme' for up to 30 days and rehabilitation activity for up to 15 days.

Giving their reasons for imposing a suspended jail term, magistrates said of the assault offence: "It was a sustained assault, domestic violence, on a former partner in her home and it was drink-fuelled."

The defendant was represented by defence lawyer Tariq Khawam.
