A community group which provided a lifeline for residents during lockdown has been recognised for its commitment.

The Ewanrigg and Netherton Tenants and Residents Association (ENTRA) provided care packages for the community to help tackle social isolation, as well as investing in refurbishing its community centre base to provide a welcoming venue once people were able to return as restrictions eased.

Home Group, one of the UK’s largest providers of integrated housing and care, has now handed the centre a Customer and Volunteer Award, which are given to those who go above and beyond.

Sharon Barnes, chairperson for ENTRA, said: “We are truly amazed to be nominated and receive this award for something we all enjoy doing.

“It’s nice to be nice; giving back will hopefully help with intergeneration in the community and stop isolation on the estate.”

The group, which has been running for 10 years, came into its own during the pandemic, with members volunteering to deliver Covid-19 vaccines and supplying Scarlett Boxes in the local surgery to offer sanitary products.

Colette Small, lead engagement advisor at Home Group, added: “They’ve boxed in pipes, plastered walls, refurbished the toilets, replaced the heating system and boiler, fitted security grills outside, painted outside and replanted flower beds.

“They’ve even fitted a suspended ceiling in the main hall with low energy dimmer lights, so acoustics and lighting are improved for plays and shows.

“Their care, passion and energy for their community is immense.”

The group secured £27,000 to improve the centre and brought organisations including Home Group, Bell Group, Tivoli, Lakeland Pencil factory and Ewanrigg Local Trust together to deliver bags containing activity packs, treats and agency support leaflets to about 1,000 residents in Maryport.
