This week we’ve been delving into our archives to find photos from the Metal Box company.
A huge employer in Carlisle over the years, its roots were in a firm founded by Benjamin Scott in 1799 as a printing, bookselling and stationery business.
In 1869, under the direction of Hudson Scott, nephew of Benjamin, the company went on to produce decorated metal boxes from its James Street factory in the city and continues to operate to the present day.
Some of its decorative tins from years ago are now collectors’ items, particularly those made for biscuits made at neighbouring factory Carr’s of Carlisle.
Our photos give a glimpse into the working life of the staff at Metal Box over the years. Did you work at Metal Box? What are your memories?
