A young man has won a community award.

Danny Poland, who lives in Irthington, which is near Brampton, has won a Cumbria in Bloom award.

Cumbria in Bloom is an organisation which recognises and gives awards based on efforts in gardening and horticulture.

The award was the Young Person's Award, which was presented to Danny at St Kentigern's Church, in Irthington, on October 13, 2021.

Danny won the award for his efforts in the community, including his work in putting a vegetable garden in the local school, Irthington School, where vegetables were planted in time for them to fruit when the children returned to study.

The award is given out to groups or people individually.

Danny was also instrumental in getting the village to have more plants, hanging baskets and pots present.

Another award was given to the village of Irthington to reflect this.

Irthington was awarded a silver gilt award in the Pride in Your Community category, which Danny also accepted on behalf of the village.

Danny said on being given the award, which was awarded after judgment from Cumbria in Bloom judges: "I feel great, it's a great award for the village."

Danny said he is possibly looking to get more awards in the future, but is working full time in a garden centre.

Danny's mother, Samantha Poland, spoke of his success: "Danny's idea would not have been able to reach this conclusion had it not been for the wonderful people in Irthington.

"This idea started to grow when everyone began to work together and community spirit grew along with the plants, pots and hanging baskets.

"The village school, church, pub, families and individuals, so many became involved and the result was a village full of blooms and colour.

"We have all benefited from having a stunning village to enjoy for all of these past months."

Danny's grandmother, Yvonne Kendal, also spoke of high praise: "I am so proud of him.

"There are so many people here to support him, and they have been supporting him right the way through.

"He has done well."

Cumbria in Bloom are going to places across the county to give awards individually this year because of still present fears of health risks related to Covid.

Usually, the awards are given in a big ceremony with everyone present, however the judges felt that people were not quite ready for something like that just yet.

The winners of each award in the Cumbria in Bloom Awards will be announced soon.
