An emotional day of events in memory of a Lake District farmer has raised more than £20,000 for good causes.

The Martyn Mawson Memorial Day was organised by Bassenthwaite brothers James and Edward Mawson in memory of their late father.

Mr Mawson, 52, a beef and sheep farmer of High Side Farm, Bassenthwaite, died after a quad bike accident in May 2020.

The memorial events took place on Sunday at Keswick Rugby Football Club, with the day being enjoyed by all who attended and helped to raise money as well as honouring the memory of Mr Mawson with his family.

James said: “It was a great success, it was a very good day.

"We have raised over £23,000 now in total.

"The turnout was unbelievable, the atmosphere at the rugby club was absolutely bouncing; it was just a great day.

“My dad would have loved it, he would have been in his absolute element there.”

The day raised money for four charities, all close to the Mawson family: Keswick Mountain Rescue Team; the Great North Air Ambulance Service; Alzheimer’s Society; and Prostate Cancer UK.

Among the variety of events taking place was the final of James’ 15 half marathons in 15 days – run in the build-up to the memorial events in a gruelling test of endurance.

The run saw James and Edward joined by a number of their closest friends to complete the run as the challenge drew to a close.

The brothers also both participated in the Martyn Mawson Memorial Match of rugby union between Keswick and Cockermouth.

A touching moment saw James’ brother Edward score a try in the second half.

A live auction and raffle draw also too place on the day and contributed to the fundraising efforts.

With more than £23,000 being made to date and money still coming in, the brothers have been overwhelmed by the community's support for them.

When asked how he felt about the amount of money which had been raised, James said: “Proud. It’s quite overwhelming.

"We set off with a target of £5,000 so, when we were adding it up yesterday and it came to £23,000, we were just shocked and overwhelmed.

"We were a bit lost for words.

“Thanks to everybody who showed support, donated, came to the rugby club on Sunday and has been supporting us for the past couple of weeks.”
