Close friends and family of a man who died of brain cancer will come together to celebrate his life by sharing in his passion for fell walking.

Andy Turner, who died on October 21 last year, spent the final years of his life ticking off the 214 Wainwrights.

He managed an impressive 173 before he died.

Since then, his wife Susan Turner has been completing the remaining Wainwrights on his behalf.

On October 21 this year, close friends and family of Mr Turner will be joining Susan to complete the remaining eight in a fitting challenge that will raise money for charities that were close to Andy’s heart, and celebrate the 'kind, caring and unassuming person' he was.

“It means a lot,” said Susan.

“Doing his last 41 Wainwrights is a lovely way to remember him.”

The final eight Wainwrights challenge will take in two mountain ranges and finish on Scafell Pike – one of the Wainwrights that Andy always intended to do.

Talking about the day of the challenge, Susan added: “I think there will be a mixture of emotions.

“It will be a gruelling physical challenge, so a fantastic achievement and fantastic that we have done it in his name.

"But it will also be emotional as we should have climbed that final summit together.”

Both of Andy’s sons, Elliott and Austin will also be taking on the challenge in memory of their father.

Gary Miller, said the challenge is a 'perfect tribute' to his late friend.

“As a close group of friends [we] don’t get together very often, but when we do we just pick up where we left off," he said. "Andy was very much part of that and there is a real void there now he has gone."

“When we do get together it hits home how much we miss him.

“Most of us enjoy fell walking and got together with Andy when we could and when he was well enough to do a few fells and catch up, so the challenge of doing what would have been his last eight Wainwrights with Susan is a perfect tribute to him.

“It will be a tough day, but there will have been days when Andy was struggling with illness and he still found the strength to conquer the fells so we have that as our motivation.”

Funds raised through the challenge will go towards Brain Tumour Research and Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland.
