Leaflets with an anti-abortion message were distributed to homes in Denton Holme.

A member from the Elim Free Church distributed the leaflets.

A concerned resident, who chooses to remain unnamed, vehemently opposed the leaflet's message.

They said: "This is extremely distressing and triggering for women who have been through this and women should feel safe in their own homes.

"Many women who have had an abortion are extremely vulnerable and carry lifelong scars from their ordeal.

"Statistically women who have experienced physical or psychological abuse and women from poorer economic backgrounds are more likely to seek an abortion and it is absolutely abhorrent that they should be harassed with this imagery and literature in their own homes."

The resident went on to say they want further light to be shed on the 'disgusting manner in which this church is conducting itself in demonising women for exercising their human rights, exposing them to reminders of the very real and raw traumas they have been through.'

They added: "These women should be supported and empowered, not persecuted by religious organisations who preach “love thy neighbour”".

In response, the deacon of Elim Free Church, Thomas Salkeld, said it was not part of the church's policy to do such a thing.

He said: "I don’t have a perspective on it, the church certainly is not putting this out, but possibly a member of the church is as an individual.

"This certainly isn’t the position on the church.

"Personally I don’t believe in abortion, but as this person said, it’s a persons individual opinion."

"The church's position it to put gospel tracks through doors, but certainly not either way about abortion."
