Muncaster Castle has this week announced the theme of its annual Halloween festival.

The castle, which overlooks the River Esk, about a mile east of the west-coastal town of Ravenglass, hosts the festival each year, making the area a ‘must visit’ during the autumnal season.

This year's festival will pay homage to the Mexican festival ‘Dia do los Muertos’, otherwise known as the 'Day of the Dead'.

The Mexican holiday takes place over a series of days and involves family and friends gathering to pray for and to remember friends and family members who have died.

It is commonly portrayed as a day of celebration rather than mourning.

There are a wide variety of events and activities that will take place over the event.

Guests will be able to take part in features including the Scary Maze, fire juggling shows, alchemy workshops, kids crafts in the Ghostly Grotto and for over-18s there is the axe throwing which takes place at the weekend.

There will also be the Twilight Owl show which takes place at 7pm every evening, resulting in a spooky atmosphere.

The Halloween Festival runs from October 23 to 31.

Tickets are now available to purchase online via the Muncaster Castle website.
