A BABY alpaca has been born at a holiday park in Silloth.

The Solway Holiday Village welcomed its latest furry resident earlier this week.

Staff said that both the mother and baby are doing well.

Stan Standaloft, manager of Solway Holiday Village, said: "Lots of people have already taken a lot of interest in her.

"We're coming to the end of a very difficult time with the pandemic so it has given people a lot of joy in this difficult time.

"People really do love them.

"They've been here for many years. Lots of people don't know, but Silloth is the first place that alpacas arrived when they came to the UK.

"They arrived at the port of Silloth and later made their way to other parts of the country."

The holiday village said that there are a number of alpacas on the farm including three males and four females, all of whom are pregnant.

They are expecting another alpaca to be born on the farm in the coming week.

The other two are expected to arrive in February.

A name has not yet been decided for the baby alpaca, but staff at the village have taken to social media to ask for suggestions.

Customers can suggest names, and the best one will be picked next week.

The baby is currently being cared for in the farmyard and will be moved in with the rest of the animals in a few days.

The village has a team of three people who manage the animals and make sure that they are properly cared for.

One member of staff works full time caring for the alpacas and other animals, including the pigs and donkeys.

The three males on the farm are walking alpacas that visitors can take out for treks.
