RESIDENTS are being asked to have their say on proposed improvements to a popular park.

Carlisle City Council is asking people in the area what they would like to see happen at Hammond’s Pond in the city.

They have proposed a number of different ideas to help improve the space with almost half a million pounds available to help with the work.

The works will be funded by Section 106 developer contributions from a nearby private residential development and, in total, about £450,000 has been provided to upgrade the park in four main areas: footpath improvements; landscaping and drainage improvements; recreational facilities improvements; and CCTV and security improvements.

A major programme of work, costing about £120,000, has already been undertaken to completely overhaul the children’s play facilities within the park, making them accessible, exciting and fit for purpose for many years to come.

Other work, including the installation of additional CCTV, replacement of end-of-life footbridges and resurfacing footpaths, is currently in the procurement phase.

Carlisle City Council, with the support of the Friends of Hammond’s Pond and Hammond’s Pond Café, is now consulting residents to get their views on other aspects of work to be undertaken.

These include the replacement of an end-of-life ball games area; upgrades to the BMX track; and options for additional car parking, new pedestrian access routes and vehicle access control measures.

Councillor Elizabeth Mallinson, portfolio holder for communities said: “Hammond’s Pond has already benefited from major investment and more is planned.

"This next stage of consultation is another opportunity for communities to have their say on the next stage of improvements.

"We’d like to thank the Friends of Hammond’s Pond and the Hammond’s Pond café for their continued support.”
