Fans and players said a fond farewell at the weekend to a popular Whitehaven RLFC stalwart who had been with the club for many years.

Jessie Joe Parker played his final game for the club on Sunday against Halifax and fans flocked to LEL Arena to commemorate his career.

Jessie was a long-serving player who has been at the club for eight years and became a19 fan favourite during this time.

Andrew Canavan, chief executive of Whitehaven RLFC said: “It went very well. Jessie didn’t spend too long on the pitch, but it was a good event.

“Jessie was given a guard of honour from both clubs as he came out on to the pitch.

“There were also children with banners saying a thank you to him.

“As he came out he was given a big round of applause and it was a really good send off for him.

“We enjoyed the day. It’s just a shame that all good things must come to an end.

“It was very emotional because he loves the club and loves the area.

“We know he wants to stay local so we may have plans for the future.”

Jessie took time to get photographs with the youngsters who were on the pitch with flags.

He also spent time talking to Jonty Gorley, the new head coach, amongst other club officials.

At the end of the game some fans came on to the pitch chanting and personally congratulating Jessie for his time at the club.

During his time at the club Jessie made every effort to become involved with the local community, befriending many people and taking time to help the young people in the area.

Before the match began, Kells ARLFC under-12s took on Maryport as a curtain raiser.

The ovation he was given from the crowd and players alike helped to cement this as an important day in the club’s history.

Jessie and the rest of the squad also sent their wishes to Danny Hodgson – a local man who was recently attacked and is receiving treatment in Australia.

The game was also a success as Whitehaven secured a victory, which was touching as their last home game of the season.

They beat Halifax 18-6 and go on to play Bradford Bulls this coming Sunday away.
