A KESWICK councillor has said his community is ‘pulling together’ after a devastating fire over the weekend.

Firefighters worked in the town on Friday and Saturday first to put out the blaze and then to support the buildings and make the area safe.

Just after 6am on Friday firefighters were alerted to a domestic property and campervan being ablaze on High Hill.

Five fire appliances, one aerial ladder and a joint command unit were deployed to the scene.

Firefighters used five hose reels, two covering jets and four breathing apparatus to help them douse the flames.

Crews from as far as Carlisle were in attendance and returned on Saturday morning to help make the area safe for residents.

It is understood the fire started out in an outside motorhome and quickly moved to nearby houses.

On Saturday morning a spokesman from Carlisle East fore station said: “Our Aerial Ladder Platform and appliance attended this incident yesterday, and helped extinguish the blaze.

“They have returned this morning to help make the building safe.”

Cllr Markus Campbell-Savours believed that everybody in the town was in shock about the incident, but believed that the community would pull together to help those affected.

He said: “Obviously everyone in Keswick is really shocked by Friday night’s fire on High Hill.

“It amazing how much damage a vehicle fire has been able to cause. We are just grateful that nobody has come to any harm. Keswick’s a great community which I know is pulling together to help the family affected”.
