An army induction ceremony was conducted in Carlisle this week.

The British Army Civic Ceremony was held on Milbourne Street and gave eighteen young men and one woman the right to go onto their basic training.

They will be going to the Army Foundation College at Harrogate to do either 23 or 49 week Basic Training.

Ellie May Little, a recruit, said: “I’m excited for going into the army as I’m starting a new chapter of my life.

“I imagine that I will get nervous though when it comes to finally going to training.

“I’m proud of myself and I think I’ve done my family proud as it was a tough process to go through.”

At the ceremony the young recruits swore an oath to the Queen for their duties in the army.

At the event were recruitment office managers, three active duty soldiers and the Mayor of Carlisle Pam Birks.

The young people are presented with a certificate to say that they have passed the required tests.

Over the past months the recruits have been taking part in various form of testing to make sure that they are suitable for the role.

The types of tests included a bleep test and cognitive test.

The recruits also needed to have GCSEs that are required for their various roles in the military.

Ellie May is joining the Adjutants General Corps as a Combat Human Resources Specialist.

Another young hopeful is William Garson joining the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as a Vehicle Mechanic.

Mr Garson said: “The ceremony was a good experience it was well planned and I really enjoyed it.

“I’m really excited about it and can’t wait to start.

“I wanted to do engineering within a setting where it’s like we’re all one big family.

“It’s a good opportunity to adventure and go to new places and it’s workplace where you’ll be disciplined.”
