RUNNERS in Carlisle celebrated the bank holiday weekend by completing a 10k.

Roughly 100 people took part in the Sport in Action 10k on Sunday morning.

The event started at Bitts Park at 11am and was attended by club and non-club runners.

Claire Allen, who is a director at Sport in Action alongside her husband Brian, said: "It was a good race, a good turnout. We had a good atmosphere.

"There was a good mix of athletes from Scotland, the North East, and all the local running clubs.

"The numbers weren’t as big as what we’re used to but obviously we understand that in the current state of affairs that we’re living in at the moment.

"People are still not confident coming along and taking part in events but we’re getting there, we’re getting back to it."

The runners went from Bitts Park up the Stanwix Bank to Brampton Road. They then entered Rickerby Park, passed Rickerby Retreat and into Linstock. They returned to Bitts Park via Brampton Road.

The first male finisher was Mark Emmerson, of Border Harries & AC. with a time of 32:28.

The first female finisher was Emma Neil, of no running club, with a time of 39:28.

But the event was not only attended by competitive athletes.

Mrs Allen said: "We always tend to have a good mix. We do have those who are probably more experienced and serious runners, the main aim is the time and how quickly they can do it and beat the last time that they did

"And we’ve got the runners who are out there and just do it for fun."

Sport in Action are based in Carlisle and have managed to put on a few events since lockdown restrictions lifted.

These have included a marathon, a half marathon and a 10-mile race.

They host their final race of the year on September 8 round Carlisle Castle at 6:30pm.

It is a 5k which starts at Bitts Park and anyone can take part.
