A CARLISLE restaurant has been put up for a prestigious award.

Alexandros Greek Restaurant & Deli, of Warwick Road, has been nominated for England's Business Awards.

England's Business Awards is a competition in which companies are recognised for their work and the winner is revealed at a grand final.

Aris Pathanoglou, owner of Alexandros Greek Restaurant & Deli, said: "We are happy.

"We put it on Facebook yesterday and asked people to vote. I’m not going to do anything differently, just keep going, we’re very very busy at the moment.

"All the staff are very happy."

The restaurant celebrates its 21st birthday next week and was named after Alexander the Great, an ancient Greek king who ruled one of the largest empires in history.

It is run by Aris and his wife, Sarah. Their sons Stas and Marios work there as the front of house manager and trainee chef, respectively.

Aris, from Thessaloniki in Greece, moved to the UK in 1997.

He opened a restaurant in Hawick, Scotland before moving to Carlisle in 2000.

Aris said: "After so many recessions, we survived. After the lockdowns last year and this year we’re still here."

He added: "After 21 years everyone working here has a passion to make the customers happy and they keep coming.

"Everything is homemade traditional Greek food. We cook everything fresh."
