Former Carlisle United striker Sam Cosgrove has made a loan move to League One - where he will team up with another ex-Blues forward.

Cosgrove has joined Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan deal from Birmingham.

It comes just seven months after the big frontman made a £2m move to the Championship club from Aberdeen - a deal which earned Carlisle sell-on cash.

His switch to the Shrews will see 24-year-old Cosgrove play alongside Carlisle-born ex-Blues striker Ryan Bowman, who signed for the club from Exeter this summer.

Shrewsbury boss Steve Cotterill said he hopes Cosgrove is hungry to succeed after 12 appearances without scoring for his parent club.

"We've had to be patient to get Sam over the line but we are pleased we've got him," Cotterill told his club's website.

"He comes out of Birmingham with probably something to prove because he hasn't quite hit the ground running there as he would have liked.

"We are looking to get him back to the form he was in at Aberdeen. He was up there playing regular football and scoring goals.

"I had a great chat with him today and he's a smart young man. Let's just hope he's as clever when he pulls the Shrewsbury Town shirt on."

Cosgrove joined Birmingam in January for a reported £2m, with Carlisle entitled to what is understood to be a six-figure sum from a sell-on clause.

The Blues sold the frontman to Aberdeen for about £40,000 in January 2018 after half a season at Brunton Park.

The ex-Wigan forward made just 12 appearances for Carlisle and scored one goal, after joining under Keith Curle after a trial spell in the summer of 2017.

Bowman, meanwhile, has made two appearances for his new club at the start of the new campaign after moving up a division.

The ex-Blues youth product was signed by Shrewsbury after a 34-goal, two-year spell at Exeter.
